Gingivitis: symptoms to recognize to prevent complications

We often tend to underestimate a slight redness or some traces of blood while brushing our teeth, and consider them to be passing events. In reality, these are among the first symptoms of gingivitis.

Recognizing early the signals your gums are sending you is the only way to prevent simple inflammation from turning into a chronic problem or, in more advanced cases, even compromising the stability of your teeth.

What is gingivitis and why initial symptoms are decisive

Gingivitis is aninflammation of the gum tissues caused primarily by theaccumulation of bacterial plaque along the margin of the teeth. If the bacteria are not properly removed, they fester in the gingival sulcus and can develop into a full-blown gum infection, with symptoms that gradually become more pronounced.

But fortunately, if intercepted and treated in time, gingivitis is 100% reversible.

Inflamed gums: symptoms you may notice in the mirror

The first warning bell of gingivitis is almost always visual.

Here’s what you need to pay attention to during your daily oral hygiene.

Reddened and swollen gums

Under normal conditions, healthy gums have a light pink color and are firm and compact. When inflamed, however, they appear more red or purplish, shiny and slightly swollen.

Bleeding during brushing

Bleeding is among the most common symptoms of gingivitis. It may appear during brushing or flossing and indicates an ongoing inflammatory condition.

Gum pain or discomfort

Among the main symptoms of inflamed gums is pain, usually mild and diffuse. Rather than sharp pain, there is a sense of soreness or increased sensitivity to heat and cold.

Gum infection: signs that indicate worsening

As mentioned, if the inflammation is left untreated, it can develop into a full-blown gum infection. The symptoms in this case become more persistent and bothersome:

Persistent bad breath (halitosis)

The presence of bacteria and inflammation can cause an unpleasant odor that does not go away even with mouthwash.

Metallic flavor

The presence of occult bleeding or bacterial secretions in the gum tissues can leave an unpleasant bitter sensation in the mouth.

Gums that tend to recede (gingival recession)

Do your teeth seem “longer”? It is the gingival margin that is receding. So the root remains more exposed, and both sensitivity and exposure to infection increase.

Untreated gingivitis can go from simple bleeding or pain to even irreparable damage to the gums and, in severe cases, even tooth loss.

Gingivitis and pain symptoms: should we really wait for it to hurt?

A common mistake is to think that if there is no pain, there is no problem. In fact, in gingivitis, symptoms of acute pain almost always appear when the inflammation is already advanced.

At first, you may experience only mild soreness, a feeling of tightness or discomfort while chewing. Waiting for “real” pain often means arriving at the dentist when tissue damage has already begun.

How to distinguish gingivitis from toothache

Understanding the origin of a discomfort in the oral cavity is not always straightforward.

In general:

  • Toothache is usually sharp, pulsating, and well localized on a single element (often due to a cavity)
  • Gum pain is more diffuse, superficial, and is almost always accompanied by other symptoms such as swelling or bleeding.

If the discomfort is concentrated at the base of the tooth and involves the surrounding tissues, the cause is most likely periodontal.

What happens if you ignore the symptoms of gingivitis

Neglecting the symptoms of gingivitis means giving the green light to periodontitis. At this stage, the infection attacks the bone that supports the teeth, and leads to tooth mobility and, in severe cases, tooth loss.

However, taking action today is simple: a professional oral hygiene session with tartar ablation and a personalized home care protocol are most often enough to restore your gums to perfect health.

Why do gums get sick?

In addition to poor oral hygiene, there are factors that accelerate the onset of gingivitis symptoms:

  • Smoking, which often “hides” bleeding by constricting blood vessels.
  • Hormonal changes for example during pregnancy or menopause.
  • Diabetes or vitamin deficiencies.
  • Stress, which weakens the immune defenses of the mouth.
